New Delhi:The Supreme Court bench comprising of Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Surya Kant on Friday, refused to extend the counselling session for PG medical courses in government and private colleges.

The medical counselling is done to fill as many as 603 vacant seats in universities and 1000 seats in general.

The bench, however, refused to entertain the plea of a society representing numerous colleges and universities saying that it cannot extend the date to fill the seats as it would be like opening a 'Pandora's box.'

The bench said, "The mop-up round was to be completed by May 31, and if some seats remain vacant, it cannot be helped. Extension cannot be granted just because some seats are lying vacant without any other justification."

The plea sought an extension on account of any particular difficulty faced by any individual college or university and a large number of seats vacant.
