Mungeli (Chhattisgarh):Rakshabandhan or Rakhi is a famous Hindu festival which celebrates the bonding between brothers and sisters. It is said that on Rakshabandhan, siblings vow to protect each other from all the evils of the world. This year, Rakshabandhan is celebrated on Thursday, August 15.

On the occasion of this festival, people buy rakhi of their choice. However, in Mungeli, it is said that the festival is incomplete without the Patwa rakhi - specially made by the Patwa community.

Patwa rakhi has special importance in Mungeli

Even with the availability of several colourful and modern rakhis in the market, patwa rakhi also known as dev rakhi still holds utmost importance for the people of Mungeli. It is said that the festival begins only when patwa rakhi is first offered to the God.

The rakhi is made of Kosa thread, to which cotton is stitched.

People believe that this rakhi is pure and traditional. The high demand of this rakhi propels Patwa community to start making it months before Raksha Bandhan.
