Kaleshwaram: The National Green Tribunal has revealed its verdict on the Kaleswaram project. NGT said on Tuesday that there were violations in the project's environmental permits. The NGT made several key remarks on the occasion.

It said it was now responsible for taking remedial action as construction of the project was complete. The NGT made it clear that project construction should not have been undertaken without proper environmental permits.

However, NGT is of the view that with the completion of the project, it is necessary to set up a committee on environmental impact, measures to be taken to mitigate environmental damage.

Following the NGT verdict, the Union Environmental Ministry has been directed to set up a seven-member expert committee within a month. The committee was directed to report on the steps to be taken to cover the environmental damage caused to the structures constructed without environmental permits from 2008 to 2017.

The committee has been instructed to complete the study within the next month. The CWC decision on the expansion of the project was determined not to proceed without environmental permits. DPRs have been submitted as recently stated in the Apex Council and the Centre has issued directions not to proceed after a decision is taken.
