Mysuru (Karnataka): Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in Mysuru has implemented a novel way to control the plastic menace.
The zoo officials are pasting bar codes on the plastic items of the visitors and collecting Rs 10 from them. This money gets refunded to them after their visit if they show the plastic items while leaving the zoo.
Mysuru zoo takes initiative to control plastic menace The officials said that the move is aimed at discouraging the visitors from littering plastic on the zoo premises.
Thousands of people visit the zoo every day. On holidays and special occasions, the number of visitors crosses 10,000.
Zoo director Ajith Kulkarni said, “Our zoo has more than 1,500 animals and birds. About 20 to 25 lakh tourists visit the zoo every year. Hence, it is common to see plastic covers and items littered here and there in the zoo. Clearing the littered plastic items was a big task for our workers. Now with the introduction of this measure, the plastic menace has come under control.”
The environment-friendly move of the Mysuru zoo is being appreciated by common people and tourists alike.
