New Delhi: Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi on Friday admitted that there could be few mistakes in the National Register of Citizen (NRC) updating process.
Mistakes could be there in NRC but will prevent bad intention: Assam Governor Speaking to ETV Bharat, Mukhi said that mistakes might happen but efforts were on to prevent 'unwanted' intention on any level. "Mistakes might happen given the gigantic nature of the work. However, bad intentions are to be prevented," Mukhi said.
He further claimed that Supreme Court directions were being followed and every administrative officer is in support of the process.
His statement assumes significance as student organisations and political parties in Assam have been demanding for an error-free NRC.
The final NRC with the names of genuine Indian citizen will be published on or before July 31.
Referring to the controversy where an Indian army veteran has been tagged as an illegal foreigner in Assam, Mukhi said that he (the retired army officer) had given different documents on different occasions.
"It's not the mistake of the government. It is his own mistake," added Mukhi.
A controversy had erupted after a retired Indian army officer Mohammad Sanaullah was tagged as an illegal citizen by the Foreigners Tribunal.
The government has set up 100 foreigner tribunal courts in Assam to handle cases of undocumented immigrants.
Assam, which had faced an influx of people from Bangladesh since the early 20th century, is the only state to have an NRC, first prepared in 1951.
