Hyderabad: Termed as the longest written constitution of the world, the Indian Constitution comprises salient features and it is always interesting to know the tit-bits of its formulation. On the occasion of 70 years of the Indian Constitution, let us recall the important events in the journey of drafting the Constitution of India.
On September 19, 1945, the then governor-general Lord Wavell announced on All India Radio (AIR) that the elections will be first held for state assemblies and then the parliamentarians will be elected.
The central legislative assembly came into effect on December 6, 1946. The key leaders who elected in the elections were Jawaharlal Nehru (INC), Babu Jagjivan Ram, Muhammad Ali Jinnah (AIML), BR Ambedkar (Scheduled Castes Federation), Syama Prasad Mukherjee, M.R. Jayakar, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Sarojini Naidu among others.
Babu Rajendra Prasad was elected as the first president of the Constituent Assembly.
