Rajiv Gandhi assassination: Madras HC refuses to extend parole granted to Nalini

Madras HC has refused to extend the parole granted to Nalini, a convict in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. She had filed a plea to seek an extension of parole till October 15.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu): The Madras High Court on Thursday refused to grant an extension of parole to Rajiv Gandhi assassination case life convict Nalini Sriharan.

The court said that it had already extended the parole by three weeks. Nalini had requested for an extension of parole till October 15 as her parole ends on September 15.

She has been out of Vellore Central Prison on ordinary leave since July 25 to make arrangements for her daughter's marriage.

After being released from the prison, Nalini has been residing at Sathuvachari, an area located in the east of Vellore city.

Former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by using RDX explosive leaden belt on May 21, 1991, while campaigning at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.

According to the reports, at least 14 people were killed and 43 were grievously injured in the explosion.

Since then, besides Nalini, six others, including her husband Murugan, a Sri Lankan national, are serving life imprisonment in the case related to the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
