Lok Sabha passes triple talaq bill
In a massive victory for the ruling BJP, the lower house passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 with 303 members voting infavour of the bill.
Meanwhile, the Congress staged a walkout during the voting procedure, protesting against the law.
According to reports, Congress, JD(U), TMC staged a walkout.
Verdict against the bill stands at 82.

Speaking on the penal provisions in the proposed bill, Prasad claimed that such provisions act as a deterrance and Opposition have only raised that issue during the entire span of the debate.

Triple talaq bill to ensure women's justice: RS Prasad
Thanking all women MPs who participated in the debate, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad puts on a strong defence for the bill, by quoting the words of prophet Mohammed.
"If Islamic countries have banned the practice of triple talaq, we can also make changes as we are a secular country," said Ravi Shankar Prasad.
Further, Prasad claimed that bill is not about religion, politics or votes; but about women's security, justice and empowerment.

Time to put an end to regressive notions of Patriarchy: Aparajita Sarangi
BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi expressed support for the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019.
"There cannot be better time than today to put an end to such regressive notions of patriarchy, which treat women in an undignified manner," BJP MP said.
"This is a classic example of inadequate policy response to such social practices in the name of religion," she added.

Speaking for the bill, BJP MP Poonam Mahajan claimed that bill is to bring reforms in society and lawmakers are meant to be reformers to take the society forward.
"The bill is about bringing reforms in society," says BJP MP Poonam Mahajan.
Further, she urged Union Law Minister to consider lakhs of petitions written by Muslim women regarding the custom of triple talaq.

Triple talaq bill is Anti-Islam: Owaisi
Speaking against the proposed Triple Talaq bill, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi claims that the bill is anti-islam.
"The Supreme Court has decriminalised homosexuality. The apex court also decriminalised adultry. Now the Union government is trying to criminalise triple talaq," claims Owaisi.
Owaisi also claimed that the law is meant to seperate Muslims from their religion.
"If you have any respect for women, send all women BJP MP in a special aircraft to Sabarimala," said Owaisi.

Uproar in House over Azam Khan's comments to Speaker
Azam Khan passed objectionable comments to Speaker and Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad opposed Khan's comments and asked him to apologise. The comments came after the Speaker asked BSP's Danish Ali to direct the conversation to her instead of the House. Speaker Om Birla then took over the chair.
Meanwhile, Rama Devi replied to Azam Khan asking him to expunge his words.

Bringing up the controversial Shah Bano Case of 1986, Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi took a dig at the Congress and said that the nation is still suffering from the consequnences of the mistake made by the party in 1986. Questioning the bill, DMK MP Kanimozhi said, "Why is the government in such a hurry to pass the bill. Why are we in such a hurry to bring bills which arouse communal passions and divide people."
"There are so many issues today, but the government is tying to pass bills even without women's representation. You claim this bill is for the protection of women, but the 33 per cent reservation bill has not been passed. We don't want men to tell us what is good.
