Lockdown likely to be extended till June 15: Sources

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah as India inches towards the end of the fourth phase of lockdown. Sources said that lockdown can be extended for another two weeks and there should be sector wise specific guidelines.

New Delhi: As India inches towards the end of lockdown 4.0, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is in hectic consultations with all stakeholders to check out the next course of action.

If sources are to be believed, both central and state government are of the opinion that the lockdown which comes to an end on Sunday, could be extended for another two weeks.

Talking to ETV Bharat, Dr Giridhar Gyani, director general of Association of Health Care Providers India said, "In case of a lockdown, there should be sector-wise specific guidelines."

He said that lockdown is not a long term solution and the Government needs to revamp the economy as well.

"We need to bring behavioural change. We have to learn to leave with Covid-19 until and unless there is a vaccine for the disease," said Gyani.

A day after consulting all Chief Ministers, Shah on Friday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the PMO and briefed him on the observations made by the CMs regarding lockdown.

"The government is considering the large scale spike in different cities across India before taking a final call on the lockdown," said sources.

Sources revealed that Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan have been asked to talk with state chief secretaries, health secretaries, municipal commissioners before taking a final decision regarding lockdown.

Sources said that there could be more relaxations if lockdown extends. Emphasis will be given on the containment areas across India.

It may be mentioned here that Cabinet Secretary Gauba had a meeting with chief secretaries, principal secretary (health) of severely hit Covid19 affected states on Thursday.

District magistrates and municipal commissioners of 13 severely hit Covid19 affected cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai were also present in the meeting.

Significantly, India on Friday registered largest single-day spike of 7466 Covid19 cases with 175 deaths in the last 24 hours. The total number of Covid-19 cases reached to 165799 with 89987 active cases. As many as 71105 people were cured and 4706 deaths were recorded.
