Devotees throng Golden Temple to seek blessings on New Year
Amritsar (Punjab): Thousands of devotees thronged the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday morning to seek holy blessings as they usher in the New Year.
Devotees were seen taking holy dip on the first day of the New Year.
"We have come here to celebrate the New Year. We wanted to start our new year with the blessings of God. There is no better way to start the year. I wish for peace and prosperity in the country," Divya, a devotee told.
"People from across the country have come here to celebrate the New Year. It's always nice to visit Golden temple," another devotee Nisha said.
Earlier, Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal visited Golden Temple in Amritsar on New Year and offered prayers.
The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, is the most significant shrine in Sikhism.

New Delhi: Traffic snarls were witnessed in the Connaught Place area late night on Tuesday, as the people gathered to celebrate New Year 2020.
Adequate security arrangements were put in place in the wake of New Year celebrations. Barricades were put at a strategic location to control traffic movements and check violators.
Hundreds of people thronged to Connaught Place area at midnight in the heart of national capital to celebrate the New Year 2020 with joy and fervour.
Elders, children and young men and women were seen greeting each other and taking selfies. Children and youngsters played the trumpet to welcome the new year.
"As the dispersal is going on and people are now going back, women safety remains our top priority," said Eish Singhal, DCP, New Delhi.
Police have also warned that strict action will be taken against drunken driving, stunt biking, over speeding and dangerous driving.
"We are keeping a check on drunken driving, rash driving and stunt biking and our picket is keeping an eye on violators," he added.

198 people held for drunk driving in Mumbai
Thousands of people in Mumbai gathered at beaches and thronged promenades such as Marine Drive from late Tuesday evening to ring in the New Year.
While no untoward incident was reported till midnight, Sandit Bhajibhakre, Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Police (Suburbs), said that 198 people had been held for drunk driving.
