Little crusaders lead anti-plastic campaign in this Bihar village

A bunch of pre-schoolgoing children have taken up the responsibility to ensure that their village in Bihar's East Champaran district becomes plastic-free. The children have been putting up placards - with messages meant to spread awareness on the harmful effects of plastic written on them - at the dumping yards in the village.

Motihari (Bihar):At a time when there is an increased need for awareness on the hazards of using single-use plastic, pre-schoolgoing children at a village in Bihar's East Champaran district are setting a fine example.

Kids attending the Anganwadi Centre in Madhuchhapra village in Pipra Kothi Block, are enlightening the adults about the ills of plastic and advising them to avoid its usage.

"Kids are going around the village raising slogans and have also put up placards. People in the village are now aware, understand that they should not use plastic. This has led to a considerable reduction in plastic-use," said Ramnarayan Pandey, a resident of the village.

The children have got slogans written on placards and put them up at the dumping yard in the village, where heaps of plastic can be seen scattered around.

Apart from imparting knowledge about environmental conservation to the kids, teachers at the centre are also encouraging villagers to shun the use of plastic.

"We teach kids not to use plastic as it is harmful to the environment. Kids then pass it on to their parents. We even educate the parents about it when they come here," said Vidyanti Devi, the director of the Anganwadi Centre.

Though the state government has banned the use of single-use plastic, people have been seen violating the ban. These kids, however, have now taken the lead, and hope the adults follow suit for the better of the planet.
