Bengaluru:The Indian Space Research Organisation on Wednesday said the training of astronauts for the ambitious manned mission 'Gaganyaan' will commence from the third week of January in Russia.

Four astronauts have been identified for the mission, ISRO chief K Sivan said adding the training of astronauts will start from third week of this month in Russia.

After years of roadblocks and delayed funding, ISRO's human spaceflight programme was finally approved by the government in December 2018, and allocated Rs 10,000 crore for the project. A Human Space Flight Centre was set up a month later in Bengaluru.

Under the programme, aimed to be launched by 2021, a three-member crew will spend a minimum of seven days in space.

The mission is expected to be launched in December 2021.
