India stands among world's top 10 Covid-19 infected countries: Survey

India is now among the top 10 countries in the world with the highest number of coronavirus cases, says the data released by US-based CSSE. India witnessed a spike of more than 6500 cases in the last 24 hours with 154 fresh deaths.

New Delhi:With a total number of 1,38,845 Covid 19 cases, India is now among the top 10 countries in the world with the highest number of such cases.

According to data by Centre for System Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University, India at present stands behind Turkey (1,56,827).

The top three countries with the highest number of Covid-19 case are US (1,643,499), Brazil (363,211) and Russia (353,427), says the data released by US-based CSSE.

India witnessed a spike of more than 6500 cases in the last 24 hours with 154 fresh deaths. The total casualty figures reached 4021.

"India at present has 77,103 active Covid-19 cases," Union Health Ministry said.

A total of 57720 people have been cured so far. In the last 24 hours, 3280 patients were found cured taking the total recovery rate is 41.57 per cent.

"Through a graded, preemptive and pro-active approach, the central government is taking several steps along with the States and UTs for prevention and management of Covid-19."

Meanwhile, officials in the Health Ministry said that the positive rate of Covid-19 cases per 100 tests has increased to 5 per cent.

Cases in states like Maharastra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi are still a reason to worry.

Meanwhile, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said that India has rapidly increased its Covid-19 testing capacity and is on track to meet the emerging requirements.

"India has developed an intelligent testing strategy to remain ahead of the virus and develop testing infrastructure including laboratories and other means of testing," the ICMR said.

India at present carries more than 1.1 lakh Covid-19 tests per day.

Meanwhile, the health ministry has said that HLL Lifecare Limited, the procuring agency of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is procuring PPEs from manufacturers and suppliers only after getting their coveralls tested and approved by one of the eight labs nominated by the Ministry of Textile for testing the same.

"It is only after their products qualified in the test prescribed by the technical committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare that they are procured. The HLL is also undertaking random sampling of the supplies being made for which testing protocol has been devised. In case of any failure, the company is being served disqualified for any supplies," the ministry said.

All the states and UTs have been asked to ensure procurement which is being carried out at their level after following be prescribed testing for PPEs from MoT nominated Labs.

"In addition manufacturers who have got their product qualified from the slabs are also being onboarded on government e-market place," the ministry said.

Significantly, the domestic production capacity of PPEs an N-95 mask and the requirement of the states and duties are being sufficiently met as the country is producing more than 3 lakh PPEs and N-95 mask per day.

"States and UTs, as well as Centre institution, has been provided with around 111.08 lakh N-95 mask and around 74.48 lakh personal protective equipment," the ministry said.
