New Delhi:The already troubled relationship between India and Malaysia is all set to get bitter further as New Delhi has slammed Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad comments on the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Malaysian PM during his address at the Kuala Lumpur Summit criticised India's new Citizenship law by saying, "I am sorry to see that India, which claims to be a secular state now is taking action to deprive some Muslims of their own country."

Calling this factually inaccurate, Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement saying that the Citizenship Amendment Act provides for citizenship through naturalization to be fast-tracked for non-citizens who are persecuted minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The Act does not impact in any manner on the status of any citizen of India or deprive any Indian of any faith of her or his citizenship.

It even refrained the Malaysian Prime Minister from making such statements on India's internal developments, especially without a right understanding of the facts.

India-Malaysia relationship has been on a downward spree for quite some time, especially, after Modi administration revoked Article 370 from Kashmir.

Since then Malaysia which has been a close ally of Pakistan criticised government's move. Mahathir Mohamad even raised the issue at the 74th UNGA session in New York.
