With a single-day spike of 9,887 COVID 19 cases, India has now overtaken Italy to become the sixth worst affected country after the number of coronavirus cases in India rose to 2.35 lakh.

New Delhi: India on Saturday surpassed Italy with 2,36,954 COVID 19 cases, said global COVID 19 tracker of John Hopkins University.

With a single day spike of 9,887 COVID 19 cases, India crossed Italy (2,34,531) to reach 6th slot of the global platform. India has also registered 6649 total death due to the pandemic. With this total number, India now stands after Spain (2,40,978).

US with 18,97,838 cases, Brazil with 6,14,941 and Russia with 4,49,256 cases are the top three countries with highest number of COVID 19 case.

In last 24 hours, India registered 294 deaths from across the country. Number of active cases in India is 1,15,942 whereas 1,14,073 people have also been cured from this infectious disease.

Meanwhile, WHO's chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan said that COVID 19 cases in India has been growing but not exploding.

"The number of COVID 19 cases in India has been doubling every three weeks but the epidemic is not growing exponentially in the country," Dr Swaminathan said in a press conference in Geneva on Friday.

She substantiated her claim that COVID 19 cases in India with a population of 1.3 billion looks big but "for a country of this size it's still modest."

In a related development, a Central team from Delhi on Saturday visited hospitals, quarantine centres in Assam and took stock of the COVID 19 prevailing situation. Meanwhile, health ministry statistics said that a total of 4611 COVID 19 patients have been cured in last 24 hours taking the total recovery rate to 48.20 percent.

Significantly, ICMR has also ramped up the testing capacity for detecting the novel coronavirus in infected persons. With a total of 742 testing laboratories, the number of government labs and been increased to 520 and private labs has been increased to 222.

With 1,37,938 COVID 19 sample testing in last 24 hours, the total number of testing reached to 45,24,317.
