New Delhi: A recently inaugurated road in Uttarakhand to shorten the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has snowballed into a Diplomatic spat between India and Nepal. India today denied allegations of any border violation in response to formal objections lodged by the Nepalese
Foreign Ministry pertaining to inauguration of a road in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand earlier. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday through video conferencing inaugurated a road between Dharchula to Lipulekh, near the China border, a territory claimed by Nepal.
On Saturday in a stern lengthy statement expressing regret at what it called India’s “unilateral act” , the Foreign Ministry of Nepal called upon India to refrain from carrying out any activity on ‘Nepalese territory’- underlining its claims on all territories east of Mahakali river, “including Limpiyadhura, Kalapani and Lipu Lekh” as per the 1816 Sugauli Treaty.
“This was reiterated by the Government of Nepal several times in the past and most recently through a diplomatic note addressed to the Government of India dated 20 November 2019 in response to the new political map issued by the latter,” the statement said.
However denying any violation of sovereign territory as accused by Kathmandu, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Anurag Shrivastava said, “The recently inaugurated road section in Pithoragarh district in the State of Uttarakhand lies completely within the territory of India.”
