IMD: Low pressure over Arabian Sea likely to move towards Gujarat & Maharashtra coasts

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, a low pressure formed in the Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep is likely to concentrate into a Depression during the next 24 hours.

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), on Sunday, informed that a low-pressure has formed in the Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area, which is very likely to concentrate into a Depression during the next 24 hours.

It further stated that the Depression over the East Central and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours.

It has been predicted that the cyclonic storm will reach Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts by June 3.

Currently, there are two storms forming over the Arabian Sea, one lies off the African coast and is likely to move over Oman and Yemen, while the other one is placed close to India.

IMD said in its statement, "The Depression over South coastal Oman and Yemen remained practically stationary during past 24 hours and least centre at 05:30 hours IST of today. It is very likely to maintain the intensity of depression during the next 12 hours and gradually thereafter. It is very likely to move slowly West-southwards during the period."

The development comes 10 days after Cyclone 'AMPHAN' hit the coasts of West Bengal and Odisha, that left 86 people dead and rendered ten million people homeless.

However, the conditions are becoming favourable for further advance of Southwest monsoon into some more parts of South Arabian Sea, Maldives-Comorin area, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours, IMD said.

Heavy rainfall will occur over the parts of South Peninsular India during May 30-June 2, with heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kerala and Lakshadweep from May 30 to June 1.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into Southeast and East Central Arabian sea from May 31 to June 4.
