New Delhi: Senior Supreme Court lawyer Upamanyu Hazarika on Friday said that government does not have sincere intention to deport illegal foreigners from the country.
Hazarika also raised the question on the fate of the detected illegal Bangladeshis after the August 31 deadline.
"I don't think the government is serious at all. As the Supreme Court is observing the whole issue, the government is taking the initiatives," said Hazarika.
Raising question over Government's sincerity, Hazarika said that the NRC process was started early last year, and the government is asking for verification when only a few days are left for the publication of final NRC.
"The entire NRC process started last year. They could have told about the verification last year only," said Hazarika adding that the government in its affidavit seeking verification did not have strong reasons.
It is to be noted that in the last hearing the government had asked for 10 and 20 per cent verification of NRC.
He said that there is no clarity on the fate of the detected illegal foreigners.
"Neither the central government nor the state government is giving any clarity on the fate of the detected foreigners, though cases of all the detected foreigners will go to the foreigners' tribunal for further hearing," said Hazarika.
There are 100 foreigners tribunals in Assam to hear cases related to illegal foreigners.
