Assam-Mizoram border row will be resolved amicably: Govt

Amid tensions at Assam-Mizoram border after a violent clash took place between the people of the two States, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of providing all support to solve the border row amicably.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday assured Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of providing all support to solve the Assam-Mizoram border row amicably.

Shah gave this assurance to Sonowal after the later briefed the situation that was followed by a violent clash between the people of both the states along the border areas.

Sources in the Home Ministry told ETV Bharat that Shah has asked the top officials in his ministry to promptly look into the matter.

In fact, Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla had a video conferencing with chief secretaries of Assam and Mizoram and took stock of the prevailing situation.

Bhalla, according to the sources, asked both of them to take maximum precautions to maintain law and order in the area and defuse any further clash.

"I had a fruitful discussion regarding the situation at Assam-Mizoram border with Home Minister Amit Shah. He assured all support to solve the matter amicably," said Sonowal after his discussion with Shah.

On Sunday, Sonowal briefed both Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and Home Ministry Office (HMO) over the situation that broke out following the clash.

It may be mentioned here that at least 10 people were injured and several huts were set ablaze on the Assam-Mizoram border on Saturday night.

The incident reportedly took place between inhabitants of Lailapur village in Assam's Cachar district and residents of Vairengte of Mizoram's Kolasib district.

Interestingly, a newly floated political party in Mizoram, the People's Conference Party (PCP) has also asked the Mizoram government to take the help of the Centre to resolve the border dispute.

On earlier several occasions too both Assam and Mizoram governments had a discussion with the Centre to resolve the border row. Both the states share a 164.6 km inter-state border.

Recently, some Mizo volunteers reportedly set up COVID check-posts on the Assam side of the border and restrained people from Assam to go beyond the area.

Assam has border disputes with Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland too.

Assam-Meghalaya shares 733 km border areas whereas Assam-Nagaland share 512 km long border areas.

Assam shares a length of 804.10 km interstate boundary with Arunachal Pradesh.
