Government aims at turning 'home makers' into entrepreneurs

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Thursday between the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Britannia industries. With this initiative, the government aims at providing entrepreneurship to women homemakers.

New Delhi: With an aim to turn 'home makers' into entrepreneurs, the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Britannia industries on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

"From now on both NSDC and Britannia industries will work together to encourage women entrepreneurs. At first, we will select 10,000 women from across country to help them with Rs 10 lakh each. This will encourage them to start start-ups and do their own business," said Dr Manish Kumar, MD & CEO, NSDC.
He said that women constitute 48 percent of Indian population "but as per estimates only 23 percent participate in labour force."

Kumar said that NSDC is also giving special encouraging to the women entrepreneurs of northeast.

"We are already working with the women in Northeast. Northeastern women do have entrepreneurship skills and with the idea of Prime Minister Narendra Modi we will promote them," said Kumar.

Echoing the same view, Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has said that if majority of women join working force, then it will add 700 billion dollar in Indian economy.

"With the signing of MoU with Britannia industries, our movement of encouraging women entrepreneur will get a boost," Kant said.

NSDC working under the aegis of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, aims to catalyze creation of quality vocational training ecosystem in India.

Since its inception in 2010, NSDC has trained more than 2 crore people through its partnerships with 600 training partners, 11,000 training centres spread over 600 districts across the country.
