Gold worth Rs 46 lakhs seized at Kannur airport

A female passenger who arrived at Kannur International Airport from Sharjah was apprehended by customs department officials after 883 grams of gold was found on her.

Kannur (Kerala): In yet another in incident of smuggling in Kerala, gold worth Rs 46 lakh was seized at Kannur international Airport on Thursday. A woman hailing from Kozhikode was arrested by the central customs department in the incident. The woman who arrived from Sharjah tried to smuggle 883 grams of gold by hiding it inside her clothes.

Recently, the Air Intelligence Unit of Kannur airport arrested a passenger with 1.17-kg gold worth around Rs 47.63 lakh on September 28, said the Commissionerate of Customs (Preventive), Kochi.

According to sources, the passenger had hidden the gold in his underwear.

A release by the Commissionerate of Customs stated that 949-gram gold was extracted from the 1,172-gram yellow metal seized in compound form.
