Ghulam Nabi Azad meets Farooq Abdullah, condemns his detention

Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday met National Conference president, Farooq Abdullah after the latter was released from 7 month-long detention.

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): Senior Congress leader and leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad on Saturday met National Conference president, Farooq Abdullah at his residence and condemned his detention.

Ghulam Nabi Azad met National Conference leader after the latter was released from seven-month-long detention. Earlier in the day, Farooq met his son Omar Abdullah in the sub-jail in Srinagar.

"I am really happy to have spoken to the National Conference president after seven months. He was kept under detention for no reason." Congress leader added.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Congress leader Meem Afzal said "A person who always worked for the nation and served the country selflessly was put under house arrest and this action in itself is extremely shameful".

Azad on the other hand also called for the release of political detainees in Jammu and Kashmir and reiterated the need for a due political process to be followed in the state.

He further demanded that Jammu and Kashmir which was divided into two union territories should be given statehood again.

Many mainstream leaders in Jammu and Kashmir including Omar Abdullah, People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti have been also put under house arrest following the abrogation of article 370 in August.
