Ghaziabad: Doctors go on strike after police assault colleague on COVID-19 duty

Dr. Ravindra Kumar, was on his way to a government hospital in Ghaziabad when he was stopped by policemen at a check-point near Pilkhuwa police station in Uttar Pradesh and was baton-charged leading to a fracture on his right hand.

Hapur (Uttar Pradesh):Doctors posted on COVID-19 duty at a government hospital in Ghaziabad went on strike on Saturday when a fellow doctor suffered a fracture on his right hand after being beaten by a police officer in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Dr Ravindra Kumar, was on his way to a government hospital in Ghaziabad when he was stopped by policemen at a checkpoint near Pilkhuwa police station. The police questioned his presence on the road amid the nationwide lockdown, to which the doctor displayed his identity card and special pass stating that he was on COVID-19 duty.

Dismissing his documents as fake, Inspector Mahavir Singh Chauhan posted at Pilkhuwa police station started beating Dr Ravindra with his baton which led to a fracture in his right hand.

“While I was on my way to the hospital, I encountered a group of policemen on the road who stopped me and hit my motorcycle with batons claiming that the COVID-19 sticker on the vehicle was a fake one, then they started hitting me on the legs and arms with batons,” Dr Kumar told ETV Bharat and added, “I kept insisting that I was on official duty but they didn’t listen to me and asked me to return home. But I somehow managed to reach Ghaziabad.”

Upon receiving information about the assault on their colleague, the doctors at Ghaziabad government hospital went on strike demanding investigation into the incident.

“When I informed my department about the incident, they went on strike demanding an investigation against the police officer and if no inquiry is initiated against the officer then we shall not resume work,” said Dr Kumar.

Meanwhile, Sarvesh Mishra, Additional Superintendent of Police, Ghaziabad told ETV Bharat that the complaint filed by Dr Kumar was sent to Hapur police station.

“The complaint application has been sent to the Hapur police station. As per information received by us, the concerned officer has said that he doesn’t want any investigation into the duel between him and the doctor,” said Mishra.

Meanwhile, the doctors at Ghaziabad government hospital continue to remain on strike.
