Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi to approach Gogoi over NRC

New Delhi:Days after the publication of final National Register of Citizen (NRC) in Assam, a fresh controversy seems to have erupted over the importance and accuracy of such a huge process.

Raising question over the synergy between Centre and the Supreme Court, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has reportedly said that he will approach Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi over the matter.

Under the observation of the apex court, Government on August 31 published the final NRC list in Assam excluding names of more than 19 lakh people.

"In the last hearing both the central and state government have appealed to the Supreme Court for re-verification in the border areas..but following statement from NRC coordinator, the process did not take place. And now in the final NRC list, more than 19 lakh people have been excluded..." said political and strategic affairs expert Subimal Bhattacharjee.

"The omission of some members of families missing from the list while the other members included in it has created doubt over the entire process," Bhattacharjee said.

"Even if the government has spent a huge amount of money in the entire process, the names of genuine Indians can't be excluded from NRC. And thus 100 per cent accuracy is needed," he added.

The NRC was updated in Assam in a bid to detect the illegal foreigners but after names of lakhs of people found missing in the list, Government has given 120 days time to make claims.
