Foreign Tablighees free to leave India: Centre to SC

The Centre has informed SC that foreign Tablighi Jamaat members stranded in India are free to go back to their countries, as the government has decided to withdraw notices against them. However, SC gave liberty to those who challenged the Centre's decision to continue with their cases.

New Delhi: In a reply to the Supreme Court (SC), the Centre informed that foreign Tablighi Jamaat members stranded in India are free to go back to their countries, as the government has decided to withdraw notices against them.

However, the central government also said that one who faced criminal charges can tender an apology and leave India.

Meanwhile, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the apex court that 10 foreigners have decided to contest their cases against any exercise of plea bargaining.

Hearing that the constitutional bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar directed, "In such a case, all the petitions should be transferred to Saket court complex, Delhi, and must be disposed within 8 weeks".

Besides, the bench also said that liberty has been granted to approach SC if petitioners want and the matter is to be heard after 8 weeks.
