First batch of Indians in Maldives set to board navy ship back home

The first batch of Indians, who will be repatriated from Maldives, will shortly board INS Jalashwa, which has reached the Malè port. Officials were seen in full protective gear as passengers started arriving at the ferry terminal.

Malè (Maldives):Preparations on-board INA Jalashwa began on Friday to receive Indian nationals who will be brought back to India, as the ship drew close to the Malè port.

The passengers are expected to shortly board the ship, which will bring them back to India under the first phase of Operation 'Samudra Setu'.

According to the High Commission of India in Maldives, a sum of 600 Maldivian Rufiyaa or an equivalent amount of US $40 will be charged as the evacuation service charge from Indian nationals listed for repatriation.

Earlier in the day, High Commission officials and volunteers were seen in full protective gear as Indian nationals began arriving at the ferry terminal in Malé to go through necessary checks and procedures.

Along with Jalashwa, Indian Naval Ship Magar has also been pressed into service to commence evacuation operations in Maldives from May 8.

The Indian Mission in the Republic of Maldives has reportedly prepared a list of Indian nationals to be evacuated by naval ships and will facilitate their embarkation after the requisite medical screening.

The ship has been provided relief material, COVID-19 protection material along with medical and administrative support staff.

A total of 1000 persons are planned to be evacuated during the first trip, as social distancing norms and other precautions will be kept in focus.

The evacuated personnel will be disembarked at Kochi, Kerala and entrusted to the care of state authorities.
