"Facebook-BJP in alliance, Digital imperialism imposed in India": Congress

While addressing a press conference, Congress senior leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhary slammed central government after a section of international media revealed the ties of Facebook India's executive with the ruling party. He also demanded an immediate suspension of pending licenses of Facebook and Whatsapp until the investigation of this matter gets completed.

New Delhi:Congress party, on Monday, sharpened it's an attack on the BJP-led Central government, after a section of international media revealed the ties of Facebook India's executive with the ruling party, referring it to an example of Digital Imperialism.

Congress also demanded an immediate suspension of pending licenses of Facebook and Whatsapp until the investigation of this matter gets completed.

While addressing a press conference, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary said, "There was a time when the Britishers were an imperialist power. Now, we are going to witness digital imperialism where social media will run amok in our country. Facebook is looting India and BJP is making it happen. It's an alliance."

The Congress leader assured that the matter will surely be raised in the upcoming Parliament Session.

He further alleged, "There can't be a discussion if Government doesn't allow it and if their intention is to save Facebook executives. This is just the tip of an iceberg. Facebook India executives and their top bosses in the US are hands in glove."

Earlier, Congress party had also written letters to the Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, to share the details of the investigation being conducted in this matter.

Congress again demanded that a Joint Parliamentary Committee should be formed to investigate into this matter and also a criminal investigation over the people named should also be carried out.

The grand old party said that all Facebook India's top executives should be suspended immediately and the pending approvals and licences of Facebook and WhatsApp should be put on hold till this investigation gets completed.

"Skeletons Facebook India's cupboard tumbling out faster than our monsoon rains. In a span of just two weeks, three separate articles of incredible International Media publications have revealed how Facebook and WhatsApp have colluded with ruling Bhartiya Janata Party to tarnish India's democracy and tear India's social harmony," said Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary.

Recently, an article of Wall Street Journal, titled 'Facebook Executive Supported India's Modi, Disparaged Opposition in Internal Messages', revealed that despite questioning by other employees, Facebook India's executive Ankhi Das ignored the company's claims of neutrality and "successfully lobbied with BJP".

Adhir Ranjan said, "Facebook and Whatsapp's role in subverting India's democracy is now unquestionable and beyond doubt. Their complicity in propagating hate speech and fake news to favour BJP in elections is confirmed. What makes it worse is that Facebook's global leadership team was well aware of the biases and partisanship."

Congress has also alleged that the Chairman of IT Standing Committee, Shashi Tharoor had said that Facebook officials will be summoned, but BJP members have tried their best to stall it as they are in majority.
