ECI announces election schedule for Ram Vilas Paswan's Rajya Sabha seat

Following the demise of Member of Parliament and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, the Election Commission of India has announced the election for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat. Polling is scheduled from 9 am to 4 pm on December 14.

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on November 19 announced the schedule of by-election for one vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Bihar. As per the ECI statement, the election will be held on December 14 and counting will be carried out on the same day.

The election is mandated following the death of Member of Parliament and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on October 8, 2020. The statement issued by Election Commission of India reads," The Commission has decided to hold by-elections to Rajya Sabha from Bihar to fill up the vacancy."

The notification for this seat will be issued on November 26 and December 3 would be the last date for filing nominations. December 7 would be the last date for withdrawal of candidature and the polls would take place on December 14 from 9 am to 4 pm. Counting of the votes will begin at 5 pm.

The Election Commission of India has also directed the Chief Secretary of the State to depute a senior officer from state to ensure that the election is held in compliance with the COVID-19 protocol.
