New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar will be visiting Brazil for two days from July 25-26 to participate in the BRICS foreign ministers' meet. The meeting will take place in the Brazilian capital Rio De Janerio.
This will be Dr Jaishankar's first meeting with BIRCS Foreign Ministers after assuming office. Apart from discussing issues of multi-lateral interest, the Foreign Ministers' will also hold discussions on the preparation for the 11th BRICS summit which will take place in Brasilia in November 2019.
Foreign Ministers of the BRICS nation meet twice every year. One meeting is hosted by the BRICS chair as a standalone meeting usually in the capital, and the other meeting is held on the sidelines of the UNGA.
In 2018, then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had participated in the standalone meeting hosted by South Africa in June 2018 and the customary BRICS FM meeting on the margins of UNGA in September 2018.
Regarding the BRICS FM meet, the Ministry of External Affairs said, ' India touches high importance to its engagement with BRICS and has continued to engage with that at the highest levels.'
It further asserted, 'BRICS has emerged as a valuable forum for consultation, coordination and cooperation on contemporary global issues of mutual interest and has helped promote mutual understanding.'
