DRDO scientist develops handwash unit which can be operated by foot

Shabbir Ahmed, a scientist associated with IIT-Roorkee and DRDO, has developed a unique handwash unit which can be operated by foot. This handwash unit is portable which can be lifted and shifted easily by two persons. It is 22 feet wide and 2 feet high and weighs 25 kg.

Dehradun (Uttrakhand):At a time when keeping social distancing and following sanitization have become difficult to follow in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, a city-based scientist Shabbir Ahmed has developed a handwash unit which can be operated by foot.

People are being regularly advised to keep social distancing and wash hands with soap or sanitizer after touching any object.

In view of the difficulties being faced at public places to ensure such precautionary measures, a scientist associated with IIT-Roorkee and DRDO, Shabbir Ahmed has developed a unique handwash unit.

Talking to ETV Bharat, Shabbir said, "One uses a tap which is used also by many people, thus increasing the possibility of getting infected. Keeping this in mind, I have developed a unit which dispenses liquid soap-shampoo and water by just tapping a pedal with the foot."

Though similar products already exist in the market, but the innovation of Ahmed seems more user-friendly.

This handwash unit is portable which can be lifted and shifted easily by two persons. It is 22 feet wide and 2 feet high and weighs 25 kg.

A unique feature of this unit is that it does not operate on electricity. Shabbir said a large number of people can use this handwash unit as it is very user-friendly.

He shows his desire to present the first unit to Uttrakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat.
