Doubling rate of COVID-19 cases at 12.5 days: Health Ministry

The current doubling rate for COVID-19 cases has improved to 12.5 days as against 3.4 days before the lockdown was imposed, the Health Ministry said. So far a total of 14,183 people have been cured in India.

New Delhi: Against the backdrop of a continuous spike in Covid19 cases in India, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday said that increasing of doubling days of the Covid cases is a major relief for the country.

"Doubling time of Covid19 cases touched to 12.5 days as on Wednesday," said a senior official in the Health Ministry.

The official said that continuous lockdown and social distancing has kept the country in a better position.

"No doubt spike in Covid cases is a matter of concern," the official added.

India has registered 2,958 active Covid 19 case since last 24 hours. The single-day spike of Covid cases in India on Tuesday was 3,900.

"Doubling time has improved from 3.4 days before lockdown to 12.5 days now," Lav Agarwal, joint secretary in the Health Ministry has said on Tuesday.

The Health Ministry has emphasised that it is important to sustain the momentum of doubling days.

"It is also important that each and every contact of positive patient need to be traced. Conducting surveillance for Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) symptom in contentment zones are most required things at present," another official said.

So far a total of 14,183 people have been cured in India.

In the last 24 hours, 1,457 patients have been found cured. "This takes the total recovery rate to 28.72 per cent. The total number of confirmed Covid19 cases is now 49,391," official added.

The Health Ministry official has also expressed concern following reports that several frontline health workers are also getting infected due to the disease.

As per health ministry records as many as 548 doctors, nurses, and paramedics have been infected so far across India.

In another related development, the Covid 19 cases in Northeast has crossed 100 with 15 people tested Covid positive in Assam and Meghalaya in the last 24 hours.

As of now, Assam has 45 cases, Tripura 42, Meghalaya 12, Manipur two and Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram one case each.
