Don't speculate, yet to decide on lockdown extension: Centre

The Union Health Ministry said that the government has not taken any decision on extending the lockdown yet and asked the people and responsible authorities to stop making any speculations about the extension of the lockdown, which is scheduled to end on April 14.

New Delhi:The Central government on Tuesday suggested everyone not to speculate on lockdown as reported by several media organisations.

"Don't speculate on lockdown. If Government takes any concrete decision on the issue, you all will be informed," said Lav Agarwal, joint secretary in the Health Ministry to the reporters in New Delhi.

Agrawal refuted media reports that the government has taken any decision on the extension of lockdown. The 21 days lockdown will expire on April 14.

After a Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the current situation in India over Covid 19, speculations come to the fore on the extension of lockdown.

Quoting sources, several media house have reported that the government is thinking on the extension of lockdown. Significantly, a few states have also reportedly suggested for the extension of lockdown.

Meanwhile, Lav Agarwal said that a cluster containment strategy for Covid 19 has been issued to the State governments.

"The guidelines also suggested on the containment of any major outbreak of the pandemic," said Agrawal.

He said that the Health Ministry has also classified the treatment of Covid patients in three different ways that includes Covid care centres, dedicated Covid health centre and dedicated Covid hospital.

"People with mild or suspected symptoms will be treated in the Covid care centres, moderate level of serious Covid patient will be treated in dedicated Covid healthcare centre and severe as well as the critical case will be treated at the dedicated Covid hospitals having ICU, ventilators and oxygen support facility," said Agrawal.

The decision was taken following the increasing number of Covid cases across India.

Agrawal said that in last 24 hours, 354 Covid positive cases have been reported from across India. Till date, 4421 confirmed coronavirus cases have been registered in different states in India whereas 117 deaths also took place.

"In last 24 hours, eight deaths were reported," said Agrawal. Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has asked all state governments and UTs to ensure effective lockdown and social distancing next week as there are lots of festival coming.

"Home Minister Amit Shah has reviewed the lockdown scenario with different states and appealed them to ensure total lockdown," said Puniya Salila Srivastava, joint secretary in the Home Ministry.
