Police arrest eight for violence during protests in Seelampur

The Delhi Police arrested two more persons in connection with the violence that ensued in Seelampur following protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act, taking the total number of arrests to eight.

Police had already arrested six people in connection with the matter. Three FIRs were registered in connection with the case on Tuesday.

"Two cases have been registered and 8 people arrested in relation to Seelampur and Jafrabad violence. We are identifying people through the video footage we have. Strict Action will be taken against those found guilty," Delhi Police Joint Commissioner Alok Kumar said.

Cops conduct flag march in areas of Northeast Delhi, drones being used for surveillance

With prohibitory orders imposed in northeast Delhi as a precautionary measure, the police held a flag march in Mustafabad and Ghonda areas today. "We want to give a message that strict action will be taken against those who try to disrupt law and order in the area. Section 144 has been imposed. Situation is completely under control and peaceful," Joint Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar said, adding that drones were being used for identifying miscreants, who are now being arrested.

6 arrested, 3 cases registered for arson in northeast Delhi

A total of six people were arrested and three cases registered on Tuesday late night for arson and violence during a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 in Delhi's northeast area, police said on Wednesday.

The Joint Commissioner of Alok Kumar told reporters, "we have registered three cases of arson and violence. The first case was filed for Seelampur violence, second for Jafarabad and third for Brijpuri."

Tension prevails in Seelampur; prohibitory orders imposed in NE Delhi

Tension continues to prevail in northeast Delhi's Seelampur area, which witnessed violence on Tuesday following protest over the Citizenship Amendment Act, even as police maintained a tight vigil to ensure that the situation remained under control.

Officials on Wednesday said prohibitory orders have been imposed in northeast Delhi as a precautionary measure. Under the orders, assembly of four or more people is prohibited.

According to locals, there was underlying tension in the area after protests turned violent, which saw agitators pelting stones and vandalising and torching vehicles on Tuesday.

Police were patrolling the area to ensure situation remains peaceful. Six arrests have been made so far, police said. 

Three FIRs were registered in Seelampur, Jafrabad and Dayalpur police stations in connection with Tuesday's incident.

Five persons were arrested for Seelampur and Jafrabad incidents, while one was arrested late night for the Dayalpur incident. 

Police took 18 persons into preventive custody. According to police, the men were taken into preventive custody since there was a possibility of them indulging in mischief.

Fact check: Man said to be ABVP member in viral photo turns out ot be Delhi cop

Ever since the police action on students of Jamia Milia Islamia, social media is abuzz with several images and videos showing police brutality on peaceful protestrers. 

One such image is that of a man in civil dress, donning a helmet and protective gear as usually worn by law enforcement agencies. The same man, wearing a bhule jeans and red t-shirt, was caught on camera wielding a stick on protesters, leading to claims on Facebook and Twitter that he is an RSS and ABVP member named Bharat Sharma.

ETV Bharat found the man in question and it turns out that his name is Arvind, who is a constable at Anti Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of Delhi Police, a special investigation unit, and those in this team are usually in civilian clothes due to 'operational reasons'.

"I saw the photo this morning and told my seniors that this is what is being said about me. I don't know who this Bharat Sharma is who is making the photo viral. I have been working with Delhi Police for 12 years, " said Arvind.

Confirming this information, Chinmoy Biswal, DCP South East Delhi Police, said, "Several fake videos showing police brutality were circulated accusing the police of thrashing students. It is not surprising for me to know that my constable is being labelled as someone else. I would request people not to engage in such rumour mongering."

Delhi resists CAA LIVE: SC refuses to stay CAA implementation; to hear pleas in Jan

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Wednesday closed the entry and exit gates of Jaffrabad and Maujpur - Babarpur stations for security reasons following the ongoing protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

"Entry and exit gates of Jaffrabad and Maujpur - Babarpur stations are closed. However, interchange facility to continue towards Shiv Vihar is available at Maujpur. Normal service on all other stations and lines," the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in a tweet said.

The newly-enacted Act grants citizenship to non-Muslim refugees of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who fled religious persecution and arrived in India until December 31, 2014.
