Highest single-day spike of 1,397 COVID-19 cases in Haryana; death toll climbs to 634

Haryana reported the highest single-day spike of 1,397 coronavirus cases on Wednesday, while 11 more fatalities took the death toll due to the disease to 634 in the state.

The state continued to record a sharp spike in the number of COVID-19 cases for the last more than 15 days, with its tally currently standing at 58,005.

Of the 11 fresh fatalities, two each were from Faridabad, Panipat and Fatehabad while one person each died in Kurukshetra, Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Karnal and Ambala districts, according to the state health department's daily bulletin.

530 fresh COVID-19 cases take Uttarakhand's tally to 16,549

Uttarakhand's COVID-19 tally rose to 16,549 on Wednesday with 530 more people testing positive for the disease, while the state's toll climbed to 219 as six more patients died, a health department bulletin said.

Of the latest fatalities, four were reported from AIIMS, Rishikesh, and two from Sushila Tiwari Government Hospital, Haldwani, it said.

Dehradun reported the maximum number of fresh cases at 170, followed by 81 in Nainital, 80 in Haridwar, 64 in Udham Singh Nagar, 36 in Tehri, 25 in Pauri, 20 in Champawat, 17 in Chamoli, 15 in Uttarkashi, 13 in Bageshwar, seven in Pithoragarh, and two in Rudraprayag, according to the bulletin.

So far, 11,524 people have recovered from COVID-19, 57 migrated out of the state and 219 died, the bulletin said, adding that 4,749 patients are under treatment.

TN reports 118 COVID-19 deaths; 5,958 new cases

Tamil Nadu on Wednesday saw 5,958 fresh coronavirus cases that pushed the tally close to the four lakh mark while 118 deaths took the toll to 6,839.

Recoveries were 5,606 as the cumulative number of people cured rose to 3,38,060, a health department bulletin said.

While the total infection count reached 3,97,261, active cases stood at 52,362, it said.

The state tested 75,500 samples as the total specimens examined so far rose to 44,22,361.

COVID-19 cases breach 3 lakh mark in Karnataka; death toll crosses 5k

COVID-19 infections breached the three lakh mark in Karnataka, while the death toll crossed 5,000 as the state on Wednesday reported 8,580 new cases and 133 fatalities, the health department said.

The day also saw 7,249 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Bengaluru Urban accounted for the maximum numbers in fresh cases with 3,284.

As of August 26 evening, cumulatively 3,00,406 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 5,091 deaths and 2,11,688 discharges, the health department said in its bulletin.

Record 14,888 new coronavirus cases in Maha, 295 deaths

Maharashtra on Wednesday reported a single-day highest spike of 14,888 coronavirus cases which took the case count to 7,18,711, a health official said.

The previous highest increase in the cases was 14,492, recorded on August 21.

On Wednesday, the death toll in Maharashtra due to the pandemic reached 23,089 with addition of 295 fatalities.

On the other hand, 7,637 patients were discharged from hospitals, taking the number of recovered cases to 5,22,427.

There are 1,72,873 active cases in the state now, the health official said.

Gujarat's COVID-19 cases go past 90,000; 17 die

Gujarat's COVID-19 tally crossed the 90,000-mark and rose to 90,139 on Wednesday with addition of 1,197 new cases, the state health department said.

With 17 fatalities, the total count mounted to 2,947, it said.

A total of 1,047 patients were discharged in the day, taking the overall count of recoveries in the state to 72,308, the department said in its release.

The state's recovery rate now stands at 80.22 per cent, it said.

A total of 77,949 tests were conducted in the state in the last 24 hours, which comes at the rate of 1,199.21 tests per day per million population, as per the department.

19,69,724 samples have been tested so far in the state, it said.

The COVID-19 death toll in West Bengal on Wednesday reached 2,964 after 55 people succumbed to the disease, a bulletin issued by the state health department said.

The state's caseload also went up to 1,47,775 with 2,974 fresh cases of infection were reported, it said.

Since Tuesday, 3,314 people were recovered from the disease. The discharge is now 79.75 per cent.

The number of active cases stood at 26,954.

Altogether 40,031 samples were tested in the state in the last 24 hours, the bulletin added.

Delhi recorded 1,693 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the highest single-day spike in August in the city, taking the tally to over 1.65 lakh, while the death toll climbed to 4,347, authorities said.

Seventeen fatalities have been recorded in the last 24 hours, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Delhi Health department.

Goa's COVID-19 cases cross 15,000; eight die

Goa's COVID-19 tally mounted by 497 cases to 15,027 on Wednesday, the state health department said.

With 8 fatalities in the day, the toll went up to 165, it said.

A total of 287 patients were discharged in the day, taking the count of recoveries to 11,511.

COVID-19 cases among police personnel increase in Indore

The number of corona infected patients is increasing rapidly in Indore. Many policemen of Indore have also been infected in this episode. So far, more than 80 policemen of Indore police have been corona infected, including officers from the station in-charge to CSP level.

Top officials are constantly advising the policemen to take precaution, that they should drink the decoction daily, as well as use all the resources to protect them from corona. At the same time, seeing the way the corona has spread in Indore, police personnel are also instructing them to work carefully, policemen stay on the front line and serve the public, and many times come in contact of the infected persons.

Kerala reports record single day high of 2,476 COVID-19 cases

Kerala on Wednesday added 2,476 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest ever single-day surge, taking the total infection count to 64,354. The state recorded 13 deaths as the toll mounted to 257, Health Minister KK Shailaja said.

As many as 69 healthcare workers were among the fresh cases of whom 2,243 were infected through contacts while the source of infection of 175 was not traceable, she said.

At least 1,351 people were discharged from various hospitals following recovery while 22,344 patients were undergoing treatment, the Minister said in a release here.

Among the fresh cases, as many as 64 had arrived from foreign countries and 99 from other states.

23 ministers, MLAs Covid positive: Punjab CM

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said twenty-three ministers and MLAs were coronavirus positive two days before the Vidhan Sabha session on August 28.

He gave the figure during a video conference convened by Congress President Sonia Gandhi with the chief ministers of seven Opposition-ruled states to discuss various issues.

With this, the CM tried to emphasise that the scenario was not conducive for holding physical examination for JEE-NEET.

The chief minister, however, did not disclose how many of Punjab MLAs and ministers have recovered so far.

As of today, two days before the scheduled Punjab Vidhan Sabha session, 23 Ministers/MLAs were COVID positive, said the CM in an official release.

If this was the state of the legislators and ministers, one can only imagine how grave the situation on the ground was. The scenario was not conducive to holding physical examinations, he said.

J-K reports 19 more COVID deaths, over 700 fresh cases

Over 700 new cases of coronavirus were detected in Jammu and Kashmir during the past 24 hours, taking the tally to 34,480 while the death toll reached 657 with 19 more fatalities, officials said on Wednesday.

Fifteen deaths were reported from Kashmir and four from the Jammu region, they said.

"Nineteen persons infected with coronavirus have died in Jammu and Kashmir in the past 24 hours till 5 pm on Wednesday," the officials said.

Meanwhile, 704 fresh cases of COVID-19 were reported from the Union Territory, taking the total number of infected persons to 34,480 in Jammu and Kashmir, the officials said.

Among the new cases, 195 were from the Jammu region, while 509 were from Kashmir, they said.

Srinagar district reported the highest number of 198 new cases, followed by 98 in Jammu district, the officials said.

There are 7,630 active cases in the UT, while 26,193 patients have recovered from the infection so far, they said.

Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday reported 82 COVID-19 fatalities taking the death toll due to the disease to 3,141, while highest single-day spike of 5,898 new cases took the infection tally to 2,03,020. 

"In the past 24 hours, 5,898 fresh COVID-19 cases were found. There are a total of 51,317 active cases in the state, while 1,48,562 people have been treated and discharged," Additional Chief Secretary (medical and health) Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters here.

329 fresh cases push Tripura's COVID-19 tally to 9,542; death toll mounts to 83

Tripura's COVID-19 caseload rose to 9,542 on Wednesday as 329 more people tested positive for the infection, while four fresh fatalities pushed its coronavirus death toll to 83, a health official said.

The fresh infections have taken the number of active cases in the state to 2,866, while 6,574 people have recovered from the disease so far and 19 patients have migrated to other states, he said.

Tripura has tested 2,51,660 samples for COVID-19 so far, he said.

Manager of SB-CID office succumbs to COVID-19

A 58-year-old official, working in the Special Branch-CID office here, died of COVID-19 on Wednesday, police said.

Chandrasekar, the manager of the office located on the premises of the Director-General of Police, succumbed to the virus, a press release from the Tamil Nadu police said.

The manager had been undergoing treatment at a government hospital, the release said.

Tamannaah Bhatia's parents test positive for COVID-19

Actor Tamannaah Bhatia on Wednesday said her parents have tested positive for COVID-19.

The "Baahubali" actor shared the news on social media, saying that her father Santosh and mother Rajani were showing "mild COVID-19 symptoms" last week after which everyone at their residence got tested for the virus.

"The results have just come in, and unfortunately my parents have tested positive. The necessary authorities have been updated of their situation and we are complying with the precautionary guidelines.

"The rest of the family members, including myself and the staff, have tested negative," Tamannaah said in a statement.

The 30-year-old actor said her parents are currently doing better and thanked fans and well-wishers for their prayers.

"By the Grace of God they are coping well and all your prayers and blessings will put them on the road to recovery," she added.

On Tuesday, Mumbai's COVID-19 tally rose to 1,37,678 with addition of 587 new cases.

COVID-19: Three more Punjab MLAs test positive

Three more Punjab MLAs have tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Vidhan Sabha session on August 28.

Congress MLA Pargat Singh, Akali legislator Gurpartap Singh Wadala and AAP MLA Manjit Singh Bilaspur have contracted the infection.

Singh, who is a legislator from Jalandhar Cantt, said that he has tested positive for coronavirus and is under home quarantine.

I have no symptoms (of COVID-19), said Singh, a former Indian hockey captain.

Meanwhile, a health official said Wadala and Bilaspur have also contracted the infection.

On Tuesday, Punjab minister Sunder Sham Arora, Congress MLA from Rajpura Hardial Kamboj and Akali MLA from Sanaur Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra had also tested positive for COVID-19.

The Punjab Assembly session will be held on August 28.

Vidhan Sabha Speaker Rana K P Singh had made the coronavirus negative test report mandatory for ministers, MLAs, officers and employees to attend the session.

21 fresh cases take Meghalaya's COVID-19 tally to 2,022

Twenty-one more persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya on Wednesday, taking the state's coronavirus tally to 2,022, a Health Department official said.

Of the new cases, 11 were reported from East Khasi Hills district, 9 cases from East Garo Hills district and 1 case from Ri-Bhoi district, Health Services Director Aman War said.

Rajasthan reports six more COVID-19 deaths, 610 new cases

Rajasthan reported six more COVID-19 fatalities on Wednesday, taking the death toll in the state to 986 as 610 new cases of the infection pushed the overall tally to 73,935.

Of the total number of cases reported in the state, 14,607 are currently active, a health department official said.

He added that 57,592 patients have been discharged after treatment till now.

In Jaipur, the death toll from the coronavirus infection stands at 263, followed by 89 in Jodhpur, 69 in Bikaner, 67 in Bharatpur, 66 each in Ajmer and Kota, 42 in Pali, 41 in Nagaur, 24 in Udaipur, 23 in Alwar and 19 in Dholpur.

Of the new cases detected, 136 are in Jodhpur, 127 in Bikaner, 126 in Jaipur, 70 in Alwar, 58 in Ajmer, 40 in Pali, 28 in Kota and 25 in Sikar.

Delay in testing led to rise in COVID-19 deaths in Palghar

Palghar: Delay in testing and admission of critical patients has led to an increase in the COVID-19 death toll in Maharashtra's Palghar district, collector Dr Kailash Shinde said on Wednesday.

In an official statement, the collector said that 60 per cent of COVID-19 deaths were of patients who succumbed to the infection within 72 hours of being admitted to hospitals.

COVID-19 testing to be doubled, says Kejriwal as cases rise in Delhi

COVID-19 tests in Delhi will be doubled to 40,000 per day within a week as there has been a marginal increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the city, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Wednesday.

Addressing an online media briefing, Kejriwal said that at present, 20,000 tests are being conducted per day in the city.

The chief minister said that the government has issued directions for stringent enforcement of COVID-19 guidelines, adding that everyone should wear a face mask and maintain social distancing at public places.

Maha: Aurangabad records 123 fresh COVID-19 cases

Aurangabad: As many as 123 persons tested positive for coronavirus in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district, rising the tally of cases to 21,515 on Wednesday, an official said.

According to a release from the district authorities, of the fresh COVID-19 cases, 67 have been reported from the limits of Aurangabad city, while 56 are from rural areas.

Pondy records 511 fresh cases; tally inches closer to 12,000

With Puducherry logging 511 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the aggregate number of those infected by the viral infection shot up to 11,930.

Eight more people succumbed to the virus, taking the toll to 180.

A release from Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar said out of the 11,930 cases 4,264 were active and taking treatment in hospitals or home quarantine, while the number of patients treated and discharged was 7,486. 

He said 213 patients were discharged during last 24 hours.

K'taka is clocking over 50k COVID-19 tests per day

Bengaluru:Steadily ramping up it's testing capacity, Karnataka is clocking more than 50,000 tests per day, and has conducted more than 25 lakh so far, state Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said on Wednesday.

"Karnataka has steadily ramped up it's testing capacity increasing the number of labs from 02 to 108 today.

In the last five days, we conducted 3,23,753 tests clocking more than 50,000 tests per day. Yesterday we crossed 25 lakh tests & so far we conducted 25,13,555 tests (sic)," Sudhakar tweeted.

Record 3,371 cases push Odisha's COVID-19 tally to 87,602; death toll mounts to 441

Bhubaneswar:Odisha registered its highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases on Wednesday as 3,371 more people tested positive for the infection, while 13 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 441, a health official said.

The new cases were reported in all the 30 districts, while the fatalities were registered in seven, he said.

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary on Wednesday informed that he has tested positive for coronavirus.

Haryana agriculture minister tests positive for COVID-19

Chandigarh:Haryana Agriculture Minister JP Dalal has tested positive for COVID-19, he said in a tweet on Wednesday, making him the eighth legislator of the ruling BJP in the state to contract the infection.

Dalal said he got himself tested three days ago and the report returned negative. However, he got one more test conducted later, in which he tested positive.

The minister said that he has isolated himself at home and appealed to all those who had come in his contact to get themselves examined.

India's novel coronavirus tally rose to 32.34 lakh on Wednesday with 67,151 more people testing positive for the infection, while the recoveries have surged to 24,67,758, the Health Ministry said.

Andaman-Nicobar reports 41 new COVID-19 cases, 2 fresh fatalities

Port Blair: The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 2,945 on Wednesday as 41 more people tested positive for the infection, while two fresh fatalities pushed the Union territory's coronavirus death toll to 37, a health official said.

Six new patients have travel history, while the remaining 35 infections were detected during contact tracing, he said.

U'khand CM isolates himself, tests COVID negative

Dehradun: Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has isolated himself for three days as a precautionary measure despite his novel coronavirus test report coming negative.

Sharing this information on the social media on Tuesday, Rawat said he and his family underwent a COVID-19 test along with the staff and the security personnel at the CMO as a precautionary measure.

Indore reports 187 new COVID-19 cases

Indore (Madhya Pradesh):Indore on Tuesday reported 187 new COVID-19 cases taking the total number of novel coronavirus cases in the district to 11,860 said Office of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in a bulletin.

As per the bulletin, a total of 202 persons were discharged on Tuesday taking the total number of recovered/discharged patients to 8,290.

The total number of deaths due to COVID-19 in Indore stood at 371.

There are 3,199 active cases in the district, and 6,027 people are under institutional quarantine.

According to the Union Ministry of Health, India reports 31,67,324 cases including 7,04,348 active cases and 24,04,585 patients cured/discharged/migrated.
