New Delhi: In an attempt to convict the criminals in a speedy manner, the Delhi Police will seek assistance from a team of advocates and legal experts. The lawyers, who will be hired on a contractual basis, will help the police team to file the FIR to speed up the investigation and file a strong and concrete charge sheet. The process of selecting advocates is underway.

This comes in the backdrop of the 'failure' of the Delhi Police to prove the accused guilty in the court of law in most of the cases. Most of the dreaded criminals use the loopholes in the charge sheet to escape from the punishment leading to a decline in conviction rate. The decision to seek help from advocates in criminal cases was taken by Police Commissioner S.N. Shrivastava.

This pilot survey was taken up when the charge sheet of the Delhi riots case was filed which generated a good response. Following this, the Delhi Police decided to induct 75 advocates in their post-investigation process.

With the implementation of this proposal, every police department will have a lawyer. From registering an FIR to filing a charge sheet, everything will be also be looked after by the lawyers to ensure a quick conviction of the criminals.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Delhi-based lawyer Raghav Narayan, said, "We appreciate the decision of Delhi Police. The reason behind the low conviction rate can be attributed to the legal lacunas in the Indian judiciary system. It's important to fill the gaps in the legal lacunas, to ensure that justice must be served.

Talking about the crime rate in the national capital, Narayan said, "This system will also assist in reducing the crime in the city. Fear will be instilled in the minds of the criminals and will also send a strong message to the society that wrongdoers will be given strict punishment."

The advocate said, "At times, the defence counsel points out small mistakes in the charge sheet following which the accused gets the benefit. But with the help of advocates, the police team will be able to prepare a concrete charge sheet.
