Assembly Polls 2020: How did Delhi vote compared to 2015?

Delhi saw a comparatively dull voter turnout than it did during the 2015 Assembly polls. Though the figures may eventually rise, as of now, a difference of at least nine to ten per cent was seen.

New Delhi:Delhi on Saturday witnessed a drop in voting per cent when compared to the 2015 Assembly polls, even as polling surged towards the fag end of the day.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) in the press conference today stated that the voter turnout in Delhi stood at 57.68% as of 6 pm, but in 2015, the Delhi's overall turnout was 67.12 per cent.

The statistics show the decline of almost nine per cent over the 2015 polls.

However, the current data is tentative and the final figures may be marginally different.

In Delhi elections, 2015, the voter turnout in Delhi Assembly election was highest with 67.47 per cent, in which AAP secured 54.34 per cent vote share. While BJP won 32.19 per cent of vote share.

However, this is not the first time the National capital has witnessed the low voter turnout, back in 1998, Delhi recorded just 48.99 per cent of the vote facing a sharp decline of more than 12 per cent from previous year's 61.75 per cent.

According to sources, since 1998, Delhi had seen an increase in the overall voter turnout in each successive election.

Hence, turnout in 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2015 was recorded at 53.42 per cent, 57.58 per cent, 65.63 per cent, and 67.12 per cent, respectively.

According to ECI, a total of 1.47 crore people were eligible to vote in Delhi 2020 polls.

As many as 13,571 polling stations were set up at 2,688 locations. Out of these, 3,141 were critical polling stations and 144 were vulnerable polling stations.

As per Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Ranbir Singh, 1,47,86,382 people were eligible to vote in the polls, of which 2,32,815 were in the age group of 18-19.

Counting will be held on February 11.
