Karan and Varnit, both class nine students have manufactured bricks using single-use plastic items.

The bricks, thus made, will melt only when exposed to heat above 180 degree celsius.

"It took us two to three months to manufacture this brick. When we were deliberating on implementing this idea we held discussions on its composition, and finally decided on keeping single-use plastic as the major component. Then we melted the plastic on a frying pan and put in a mould which gave it a brick-like shape, " Karan told ETV Bharat.

Elaborating on the Eco-friendly aspect of these bricks, Varnit said, "This brick will only melt when exposed to temperatures above 180 degree Celsius and the fumes thus emitted will be negligible."

The Uttarakhand government had, in 2018, announced the enforcement of a complete ban on single-use plastic bags, plastic cutlery, and thermocol in the state from August 1. It followed a state high court ruling of December 2016, ordering a blanket ban on sale, purchase and use of plastic. The court had also banned the entry of plastic carry bags into the state by any means of transport - bus, trains and air.
