IIT-K alumnus held for creating fake 'Make in India' website

Nagaur (Rajasthan): An IIT-Kanpur alumnus and his cousin were arrested by the Cyber Crime Branch of Delhi Police for using government's 'Make in India' project to extract personal data by creating a fake website.

The accused has been identified as Rakesh Jangir of Pundalota village in Nagaur district of Rajasthan. He has used the name of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious Make in India Project and earned 15 lakhs within two days of creating a fake website.

According to Delhi Police officials, Rakesh has created a fake website in which he claimes PM Modi will provide two million laptops free of cost to the students who have just passed the Intermediate examinations.

He also shared the information on Social media platforms, so that more and more people hit the website. The people who had opened the link on the Wattsapp, encountered with the message of Prime Minister's Free Laptop Distribution Plan 2019. Every person visiting this website has also been asked to fill the personal details such as name, age, phone number and state.

Meanwhile, the initial investigations have revealed that Rakesh has created this game to increase the hits on his website. Also, the website with more hits gets more advertisement. At the same time, the people who shared their information on the website can also be used for selling the data to other company.

Officials say that Rakesh has collected personal information of nearly 1.5 million people in two days from this forgery. However, Rakesh has been caught by the Delhi Police team from his village Pundaluta. While his cousin Niranjan was arrested from Delhi, also His laptop and other belongings have been seized by the police. Meanwhile, both have been presented at the Patiala House Court in Delhi and on remand till June 6.
