Cyanide Mohan sentenced to life imprisonment in 19th murder case

Sixth Additional District and Sessions Judge has found Mohan Kumar, cyanide killer to be guilty of murdering 23-year-old Arathi from Kasaragod district of Kerala in 2006 and has sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Mangalore: Sixth Additional District and Sessions Judge Sayeedunnisa on Monday sentenced serial killer Cyanide Mohan Kumar to life imprisonment on finding him guilty of murdering 23-year-old Arathi, a resident of Kasaragod district in Kerala, in 2006.

Mohan Kumar who after promising to marry many women, raped them and then killed them by giving cyanide pills has been penalized with the amount of Rs. 55,000 by the sixth additional district court in Mangalore. This is the 19th case where Mohan was held guilty.

Imprisonment ranging between one year and 10 years was imposed for offences under IPC Sections 417 (cheating), 392 (robbery), 376 (rape), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), 328 (administering stupefying drug), 366 (kidnapping) and 394 (causing hurt in committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code. A total of ₹ 55,000 fine has been imposed. All sentences, in this case, will run concurrently.

The 23-year-old Arathi had gone missing from her house on June 3, 2006. The convict had introduced himself to the victim as Mohan Kumar, a teacher from Vittal, at a relative’s wedding ceremony.

Profile of the murderer

Later, Mohan visited victim’s house after a week and said he would like to marry her. On the pretext of going for a picnic, she left her house on January 3, 2006. Both travelled to Mysuru and spent the night at a lodge.

She had worn gold ornaments as per his advice. Mohan took her to the KSRTC bus stand, he asked her to leave behind her jewellery at the hotel room, making her believe that it was an advice of a priest. At the KSRTC bus stand, he gave her a tablet laced with cyanide, stating it was a contraceptive pill and asked her to consume the same in the toilet.

As Arathi collapsed, people in the washroom rushed her to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead.
