Hyderabad:As the COVID-19 pandemic escalates to a critical stage across the world, a lot of emphasis is being placed on medical supplies and equipment, especially masks, which are now in short supply.

Health care workers and others, who are in dire need of these masks are not able to acquire them, which makes them more vulnerable to getting infected while treating the affected patients.

When to use a mask (Canva)

However, WHO recommends use of masks only if:

  • You are taking care of someone suspected/infected with Coronavirus
  • You are coughing or sneezing
  • You are a health-worker, attending to patients with respiratory symptoms
Precautions to take while using a mask

While using a mask, here are some measures to be kept in mind:

  1. Before putting on a mask, wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  2. Cover your nose, mouth and chin properly to ensure no gaps on either side of the mask, adjust to fit.
  3. If using a surgical mask, unfold the pleats of the mask and make sure that they are facing down
  4. DO NOT reuse disposable masks
  5. Dispose off the mask as soon as it gets damp
  6. Avoid touching the mask while using it. If you do, clean your hands immediately with soap and water or with an alcohol-based sanitizer
  7. While removing, DO NOT touch potentially contaminated surface of the mask
  8. DO NOT keep the mask hanging from the neck
  9. DO NOT simply place the mask anywhere after removing it. Remove the mask from behind and discard immediately in a closed bin. Clean your hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based sanitizer.

DO NOT misuse the mask. Wearing masks is not a trend, but they are important for people to prevent getting infected. Therefore, do not buy masks unnecessarily, and let people who need it more than you acquire it -- people who are more exposed to the virus than you.

You can protect yourself from the virus by maintaining good hygiene, keeping your immunity strong and taking all the suggested preventive measures. Practice social distancing, wash your hands frequently and avoid going out unless absolutely necessary.
