New Delhi: A PIL has been filed on Tuesday in the Supreme Court (SC) seeking directions to the authorities to consider the release of prisoners above 50-year-old or with existing medical conditions on emergency parole or interim bail.
Advocate Amit Sahni filed the PIL in the apex court to prevent the prisoners from contracting COVID-19.

However, the top court has already passed directions to the state to prepare a list of prisoners who can be released as it feared the spread of COVID-19 in jails.
In this regard, a high-level committee was asked to be formed by the states and UTs.
Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde said that people involved in petty crimes or having a maximum sentence up to 7 years could be considered for parole or furlough.
