 In the wake of the 21-day nationwide lockdown, BSP president Mayawati on Wednesday appealed to the centre and all state governments to provide essential commodities to the poor for free.

In a tweet in Hindi, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said: "In view of the directions issued by the prime minister yesterday to combat coronavirus, it is my appeal to all the governments to provide essential commodities to the poor and labourers either free of cost or at low prices."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a complete lockdown across the country for 21 days, asserting that social distancing is the only way out for the country in its decisive battle against the coronavirus.

The Centre has asked the state governments to ensure unhindered operation of essential services and their seamless availability for the general public during the lockdown period.

Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has said that the government is monitoring the availability of essential commodities in the market.

Paswan warned manufacturers and traders against profiteering during this period.

Curfew relaxed in Punjab

The curfew clamped in Punjab to check the spread of coronavirus was relaxed on Wednesday to let people buy essential commodities, officials said.

In many parts of the state, the curfew was relaxed from 6 am to 9 am for buying milk, vegetables and fruits and then from 8 am to 11 am for purchasing groceries and medicines, they said.

Though milk was delivered at people's doorstep in most parts of the state, they were allowed to visit neighbourhood shops for buying vegetables and other items of daily needs, as per initial reports.

Blood banks in Bengal run dry due to lockdown

With various political parties, community clubs and NGOs having to stop organising blood donation camps due to the lockdown imposed in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, blood banks in West Bengal are facing an acute shortage of supply, officials said on Wednesday.

More than 80 per cent of blood supply to 108 blood banks in the state, including 74 state run-facilities, are sourced from such camps, an official of Central Blood Bank said.

"The blood banks are facing a severe shortage of supply. Just imagine the condition of thalassemia patients and others who need a regular transfusion of blood. It is a very difficult situation," Bratish Niyogi, managing director of People's Blood Bank said.

Robert Vadra urges people to stay at home

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the longest ever stay at home order to curb the spread of COVID-19 and asked the citizens to adhere to the lockdown, Robert Vadra, husband of Priyanka Gandhi who is active on the social media, urged the citizens to stay at home for their own safety.

"We should unite to defeat the coronavirus. Stay at home for 21 days, this is for our safety," wrote Vadra on Facebook.

Vadra on Monday had posted his exercise video on the social media and said: "As we are all self isolated, we must channelise our energy to the best method."

A known fitness freak, Vadra said, "Keep working out... The correct action to take in the prevailing circumstances... Keep working and make the efforts for workouts at home, its imperative."

He gave tips on how to exercise while at home, "All these exercises look difficult, but put your mind to it and you will be surprised of your achievements.

"You do not need weights. Your own body weight and a determined mind. Four sets of 25 reps each. Alternate with Jump jacks. Get the adrenalin flowing and have a stimulating day," said Vadra.

At the same time, he also cautioned everybody: "Sanitise before and after, and stay healthier.

Flipkart ceases operations across supply chain amid lockdown

 Etailer Flipkart on Wednesday said it has temporarily suspended its operations and services - including grocery items -- as India enters a 21-day lockdown.

Although ecommerce platforms were allowed to provide essential goods and services in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation, Flipkart decided to halt all orders from March 25 for its three supply chains -- grocery, non-large goods and large items.

"These are difficult times, times like no other. Never before, have communities stayed apart to stay safe! Never before, has been at home meant helping the nations!" the company posted on its website.

In an internal email sent to employees, Adarsh Menon who is senior vice president at Flipkart wrote that senior executives will "evaluate how to get supply chains back in consultation with government and stakeholders but as of now the platform will not accept any orders".

Ecommerce giant Amazon, in a blog post on Tuesday, said that it has prioritized available fulfilment and logistics capacity to serve products that are currently critical for customers such as household staples, packaged food, health care, hygiene, personal safety and other high priority products.

"This also means that we have to temporarily stop taking orders and disable shipments for lower-priority products. For all pending customer orders on lower-priority products, we are reaching out to customers and giving them a choice to cancel their orders, and receive a refund for prepaid items," said Amazon.

The company said it will continue to work with concerned government authorities to ensure on-ground support that will enable it to offer a more expanded selection to fulfil customer needs.

MHA asks states to check rumours about shortage of food, essential commodities

In the wake of the 21-day lockdown period, the Union Home Ministry has asked state governments to check the spread of rumours about shortage of food and other essential commodities.

In a communication to chief secretaries and DGPs of all states, the ministry asked them to take action to allay apprehensions and maintain peace and tranquillity, and inform people about the availability of food, medicine and other essential commodities.

The ministry said that in the wake of the orders issued under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 (for lockdown), there were possibilities of rumour-mongering, including those about shortage of food and other essential services and commodities.

"In this context, it is imperative that all state governments and Union Territory administrations take necessary steps to suitably publicise through all available means that food, medical and civil supplies, and other essential services will be maintained and there are adequate supplies available in the country," the communication said.

According to ICMR, India has reported about 536 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 and 10 deaths till date. The experts at the apex medical research body said that it is very important to break the chain of the virus to contain the spread of infection.

It is important to note that a study done by ICMR using a simple mathematical model of infectious disease transmission has revealed that that home quarantine of symptomatic can reduce the overall expected number of cases by 62 per cent and the peak number of cases by 89 per cent.
