COVID-19: Karnataka dumps sand to block border with Kasaragod

The BS Yeddiyurappa-led BJP government dumped heaps of sand along roads bordering Kasaragod district of Kerala, thereby closing its borders with the neighbouring state, rendering several inhabitants stranded. The residents of these areas have for ages depended on Eeswaramangalam and Gali Mugham areas of Karnataka for their day-to-day requirements and medical facilities.

Kasaragod (Kerala): In a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus disease in the state, Karnataka government has dumped heaps of sand along roads bordering Kasaragod district of neighbouring Kerala, thereby blocking them and rendering several inhabitants stranded.

Several roads including Kottiyadi Panjodi that connects Delampadi to Eeswaramangalam, Mayyala Panjodi, Noojibettu, and Sullya Mandakkol, apart from other connecting roads remain inaccessible.

The people residing in the border areas of Kasaragod are unable to travel to the neighbouring state of Karnataka to procure essentials or seek emergency medical assistance.

The BS Yeddiyurappa-led BJP government had decided to close its borders with Kerala for vehicular traffic after six people tested positive for coronavirus in Kasaragod district of Kerala, which lies on the border of Karnataka, on March 21.

As many as 12 border roads between Karnataka and Kerala have been closed on account of COVID-19 restrictions.

Karnataka has recorded 59 positive cases of COVID-19 with two deaths as of 11:11 am on March 28.
