Congress questions Modi govt over MEPs meet and 'broker' Madi Sharma

New Delhi:The Congress party on Wednesday accused the Modi government of internationalising the Kashmir issue and reversing India's tested policy of not allowing any third party's interference in country's internal matter, as EU delegation completed their two-day visit to the valley.

Congress also questioned the government over the 'mystery woman' Madi Sharma and her NGO, Women's Eco-Nomic and Social Think tank (WESTT), who were instrumental in facilitating the 'unofficial' trip.

Addressing the media, Congress Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala termed the invitation to selected MEP's as the 'biggest diplomatic blunder' in the Indian history.

Ironically, the Minister of External Affairs has said that it was not involved nor coordinated their visit.

"Modi Government has made a spectacle of India's diplomacy by outsourcing diplomacy to an International Business Broker. Will the Prime Minister tell as to who is 'Madi Sharma'? Why and in what capacity is a Madi Sharma fixing an appointment for the delegation of EU MPs with our PM, on a personal visit and why Government of India is facilitating it?" he questioned.

"Over the last three days, India witnessed an immature, ill-advised and ill-conceived PR exercise of BJP Government organised by an International business broker, in which 27 EU Parliamentarians were brought to India by a non-descript think tank. Only 23 went on a BJP Government facilitated trip as four members returned back," he added.

Congress party also asked the Prime Minister to make a clear statement on Madi Sharma and the third party interference in the internal matter of the country. Surjewala said that the Modi government has committed a 'grave sacrilege' by allowing a third party to assess the ground situation of Kashmir.

"Government has caused an affront to India's sovereign right over Jammu and Kashmir," he alleged.

Terming Article 370 an internal issue of India, EU parliamentarians visiting Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday said they stand by the country in its fight against global terrorism.

The delegation was the first high-level foreign visit to Kashmir after the August 5 decision of the Centre to revoke the state's special status and bifurcate it into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Wednesday is the last day of Jammu and Kashmir as a state.
