Concern over recovery of huge cash during election in NE: Official

Election Commission officials have expressed concerns regarding seizure of huge amount of cash during the Lok Sabha pollls. The recovery is 482% high in comparison to 2014 elections.

New Delhi: Election Commission officials on Thursday raised serious concern over recovery of huge cash and use of black money in the ensuing Lok Sabha election in the northeastern states of India.

"This is a serious concern which puts the neutrality and impartiality of India's democratic system under cloud," said Deepak Diwan.

According to the officials statistics, a whooping of Rs 5.84 crore has been seized from northeastern states in last 27 days from March 12.

The recovery is 482 percent high in comparison to the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

According to the reports, cash seizure of Rs 1.21 crore were made during the 2014 election.

"Earlier this trend of cash recovery was not visible in the northeastern states. Normally, there were fest being organised by the respective candidates in the northeast. But now cash are in flow, this is serious," said Diwan.

He opined that the parties outside northeast might be involved in such kind of practices. The election commission and the Income Tax department had also tightened their grip in seizure of the black money.

Government officials said that as many as 160 IT sleuths have been deputed across northeastern states to seize black money.
