New Delhi:Another dramatic chapter has been added in the diplomatic games between India and China for the territorial upmanship in the South Asia region. President Xi's announcement of $500 million economic aid for Nepal has given Beijing an edge over New Delhi's influence in Kathmandu, say experts.

Not only this, but Nepal has also toed with China's claim on Taiwan and Tibet in a joint press statement. President Xi became the first leader from China to visit Nepal in more than two decades.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Observer Research Foundation's Director Research Prof Harsh V Pant said, '"Relationship between China and Nepal have grown in the last few years. Nepal recognises that unless it toes with the Chinese line on Tibet, it won't be able to get the kind of funding it is getting now."

He also asserted that whatever India and China say at the informal level, the reality on the ground is that China wants to remain present in India's periphery.

China has become a matter of major regional worry for India in recent years. Beijing has successfully lured all SAARC and BIMSTEC nations except Bhutan in its Belt and Road Initiative.

To counter China's bid, India in recent years has been trying to expand its regional outreach. It has been trying to lure its neighbours through lucrative deals so that they won't sway with China completely.
