Jodhpur: In a case of gross medical negligence, four children, including a four-year-old girl, were administered expired glucose saline at Umaid Hospital, which is best known for its exclusive child and health care facilities. While the incident triggered tension in the hospital with the kin of the patients demanding strict action against the negligent medical staff, the hospital administration has refused to comment on the matter.

Sources said that the four-year-old, named Kavita, of Khodwa village was admitted to Umaid Hospital on Saturday evening and was undergoing treatment in one of the units of Child Healthcare department.

The family members of the patients accused the hospital staff of administering expired glucose saline which was left abandoned in the ward. According to the kin, the glucose saline expired on June 30 but the hospital nurse did not bother to check the expiry date.

"My daughter was given expired glucose saline on Saturday night. She was administered expired glucose saline by the nurse even on Sunday morning," claimed Kavita's mother.

She went on to add, "There were four empty bottles kept in the ward. The nurse deployed on duty in the morning shift removed three saline bottles but forgot to remove one which caught our attention. We also informed the concerned authorities but they turned a deaf ear."

However, the health of the children is not affected but the kin of the patients have demanded strict action against the hospital administration.

More than 140 kids had died in Umaid Hospital and MDM hospital in Jaipur in December, sparking outrage over infants death. The report prepared by the hospital's governing organisation stated that 146 deaths were recorded at the Neo-Natal Care and Paediatric ICUs in December.
