Chennai:The rumours that actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan has been home-quarantining in his Alwarpet residence following suspected coronavirus symptoms has been doing the rounds on the social media. However, within hours of news channels airing the story, the sticker was removed by the Chennai Corporation.

The rumours began after the Greater Chennai corporation pasted a sticker reading "We are in Home quarantine to safeguard ourselves and Chennai from Corona," at Kamal Haasan's Eldams Road residence in Alwarpet. The sticker said that the persons in the property need to be quarantined from March 10 until April 6.

"Our staff pasted a quarantine sticker at Kamal Haasan's residence because Gautami (Kamal Haasan's ex-partner) had returned from Dubai recently and her passport has his address," Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash explained.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by Kamal Haasan on Saturday denied reports that he has been quarantined. “Based on the notice stuck outside my house, news has been spreading that I have been quarantined. But, most of you already know that I have not been living there for the past few years and the Makkal Needhi Maiam party office has been functioning from there. So, the news that I have been quarantined is not true,” he said.

“As a precautionary measure, I have undertaken social distancing as I requested the public too. I would again re-emphasize all of us to undertake social distancing as a precautionary measure. I also request all news agencies to verify news before breaking it so that fake news does not get spread," he further stated.

Recently, Kamal won many hearts for his generous offer to convert his party office into a makeshift hospital to treat coronavirus patients.
