Centre to bring legislation to curb stubble burning

In the last hearing the court had appointed a one-man monitoring committee on the advocate's request as despite the states taking steps, stubble burning was not coming under control.

New Delhi:The Supreme court on Monday kept its order of appointing one man monitoring committee led by former SC judge Justice Madan B Lokur to keep a check on stubble burning, in abeyance of centre's request as it is planning to bring a legislation for the issue.

The bench led by the Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde, was hearing a petition filed by Aditya Dubey who sought directions to Haryana, Punjab, and UP to stop stubble burning.

In the last hearing the court had appointed a one-man monitoring committee on the advocate's request as despite the states taking steps, stubble burning was not coming under control.

Today Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appearing for the centre informed the top court that it will create a permanent body by bringing legislation in 3 to 4 days to deal with the annual air pollution problem caused due to stubble burning in the neighbouring states.

The court welcomed the step and observed that people are choking because of pollution and the government should have acted on it.
