Centre failed to comply with the orders mandating permanent commission of women in Navy: SC

The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the orders of Delhi High Court and Armed Forces Tribunal which had directed the discharging of Short Service Commissioned women officers from Navy. The matter has been listed for next hearing on 20 August.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday has stayed the orders of the Delhi High Court and Armed Forces Tribunal which had directed the discharging of SSC women from Navy.

The bench comprising of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice KM Joseph observed that despite the apex court's 17th March 2020, order of granting permanent commission to women within 3 months, it has not been complied with beyond inviting applications.

The government has sought extension of time due to the pandemic.

"Prima facie, the Union of India having failed to comply with the directions contained in the judgement of this Court dated 17th March 2020 which mandated consideration for the grant of permanent commission within 3 months, it would be unfair to discharge the Short Service Commissioned officers in the meantime, pending consideration," read the order.

The matter is listed again for hearing on 20 August.
